Much attention was given to identifying and reviewing information on harmful ingredients that are used in personal care products, as well as on sustainable harvesting of beneficial ingredients, and manufacturing processes that are least likely to harm the environment.

Azurlis® natural skin care considers very carefully the source of ingredients used to ensure that none are derived from animals or from animal by-products. Our products DO NOT CONTAIN bee-derived products such as honey or bees wax, neither do they contain bee venom. We also do NOT USE collagen, milk, colostrum and placenta derived extracts.

All the ingredients and manufacturing processes of these products have been scrutinized by the NZ Vegetarian Society, confirming that indeed our skin care products are 100% vegetarian and not tested on animals.

Aloe vera

Aloe barbadensis properties: Emollient, hydrating, softening and anti-inflammatory properties. It is excellent for hydration of dry skin and is often used to improve eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, sun burn, wind burn, and general chapping. Aloe vera is the oldest medicinal plant known. It stimulates circulation, having a soothing effect on burns. It has excellent skin and tissue penetration qualities, encouraging cell regeneration and rejuvenation.

Apricot kernel*

Prunus Americana properties: Apricot kernel is light in texture, yet rich in polyunsaturated acids. It has a high content of linoleic acid and is readily absorbed by the skin. An excellent source of vitamin A precursor, it is great for all skin types and in particular for sensitive skins.


Properties: Anti-aging, repair and rejuvenating skin and quicken the wound healing process. It is a known fact that the largest organ in our body, skin, tends to lose its elasticity and suppleness with age. Intake of this amino acid either through daily diet or supplements is known to sustain the beauty and vitality of the skin


Arctostaphylos uva-ursi propeties: It contains the active agent, arbutin, which naturally lightens and brightens skin. The polyphenolic compounds found in bearberry leaves have been shown to have strong antioxidant properties that protect the skin from the visible signs of aging like premature wrinkles and fine lines caused by free radical damage.


Vaccinium myrtillus* properties: Bilberry happens to be a natural anti-inflammatory. This make is great for people with sensitive skin, and products with bilberry extract in them would be able to simultaneously deliver nourishing antioxidants while also keeping irritations in check, a constant worry if you have sensitive skin or are allergic to anything that might get on your skin. Owing to its high vitamin C content, bilberry is also an effective additive for helping to improve the appearance of sun damage.


Borago officinalis properties: Moisturising, emollient, softening, soothing, anti-inflammatory, rejuvenating, nourishing, hydrating, improves elasticity, firming, regenerative. Excellent for scars, cuts and bruises. Borage oil is well known for being rich in gamma linoleic acid (GLA) and it is used as a hydrating and elasticity-restoring agent. GLA is important in cell regeneration and in the regulation of hormonal balance. All in all this is a superb nourishing oil.


Calendula officinalis properties: This cheerful plant more commonly known as marigold has a long history of use in traditional medicine. An extract produced from the plant has a calming, soothing effect on the skin.

Carrot seed

Daucus carota properties: Tonic, stimulant, softening, cooling, detoxifying. This is known to improve complexion, relieving dryness, restoring elasticity and tone to the skin and it is thus a panacea for premature aging. This oil has a high content of vitamins A, B, B2 and C. It is also used to relieve symptoms of eczema as well as psoriasis and often use in restorative creams.


Ricinus communis Properties: One of the main benefits of castor oil is that it retards the growth of harmful microbes, this is due to ricinoleic acid, a potent fatty acid which helps to protect the skin against invading viruses and bacteria. Beside Castor oil works as a natural Humectant, pulling moisture from the air and trapping it close to the skins tissue. Its anti inflammatory properties help to calm and soothe a sensitive skin.

Cetearyl glucoside and cetearyl alcohol

Properties: This is an outstanding co-emulsifier wax used as an emulsion stabiliser and opacifier, adding body and viscosity to creams and lotions, and improving texture and feel with its characteristic velvety texture. It imparts emollient properties to formulations due to its absorption and retention in the epidermis where it lubricates and softens the skin.

German chamomile

Matricaria chamomilla properties: Soothing, cooling, toning, alcohol-free. Chamomile distillate is wonderfully calming and cooling. Chamomile distillates contain a much lower concentration of the active chamomile components, however, as chamomile promotes endometrial sloughing, they are used to ease discomfort associated with menstruation, and should be avoided in the early months of pregnancy. The concentration of this distillate in our skin care is intended to provide the skin benefits without any of the secondary effects. Chamomile is also calming and relaxing to the mind and soul.

Coco caprate/caprylate

COCO-CAPRYLATE/CAPRATE properties: This is skin-conditioning agent naturally derived from coconut oil to provide high hydration, superb spreadability and elegant slip.

Cocoa butter*

Theobroma cacao properties: Emollient, softening, moisturising, demulcent. Excellent for all skins, but in particular it reduces dryness and improves skin elasticity. Its pleasant chocolate-like scent adds to the wonderful silky benefits on the skin.


Centaurea cyanus properties: It contains the following vitamins – A, C, flavonoids, coumarins, cyanine, polysaccharides, tannins, essential oil, bitter substances, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and copper. The benefits come from cornflower’s cooling and toning properties and for that reason this lovely herb can relieves irritation, fatigue, making the skin softer and smoothing eye wrinkles.


Cucumis sativus properties: Anti-inflammatory, vaso-constrictor, cooling, astringent, cleansing, alcohol-free. Cucumber water is cooling and cleansing with an extremely soothing effect on the skin. Cucumber extracts contain amino acids and minerals that are important to cell regeneration processes that improve skin tone.

Dehydroacetic acid & benzyl alcohol

Properties: Also know as Geogard 221 is the trade name of an Ecocert Approved preservative containing a mixture of dehydroacetic acid (DHA) and benzyl alcohol made by the USA company Lonza. The use of this synthetic preservative is permitted by Ecocert in ecological and organic certified cosmetics. Geogard 221 has also been approved global for virtually every personal care and cosmetic application. Clinical trials comparing Geogard 221 versus parabens and paraben blends have demonstrated its higher efficacy as a broad-spectrum bactericidal and fungicidal agent, in particular for formulations with a lower pH. The safety of the Geogard 221 blend stems from its use as a food preservative for well over five decades. It has an excellent toxicity profile and its development has not required animal testing.

Evening primrose oil*

Oenothera biennis properties: Moisturising, softening, calming, astringent, soothing. An excellent source of essential fatty acids, in particular GLA (gamma-linoleic acid). GLA is important in cell regeneration and in the regulation of hormonal balance. Evening primrose oil is known for improving flaky/dry skin and conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Flax seed*

Linum usititassimum properties: These three power components of flaxseed—omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and antioxidants- have the ability to benefit the health of our skin. Here are some examples:

  • Fatty acids keep skin hydrated, moist, and smooth, preventing drying and reducing the look of fine lines, wrinkles, and dullness.
  • Antioxidants help protect the skin from environmental stressors.
  • Flaxseed’s natural oils are known to help with oily skin and clogged pores.
  • The fatty acids in flaxseed help to tone, tighten, firm and plump the skin back to a more youthful appearance.
  • Lignans in flaxseed aid the skin.

Fractionated coconut oil

Capric Caprylic Triglyceride properties: Derived from coconut oil and glycerin, it’s considered an excellent emollient and skin-replenishing ingredient. The mix of fatty acids that skin can use to replenish its surface and resist moisture loss. Caprylic/capric triglyceride can also function as a thickener, but its chief job is to moisturize and replenish skin.

Grape seed*

Vitis vinifera properties: Emollient, moisturizing, soothing, calming, anti-ageing. This is a polyunsaturated oil with a high content of linoleic acid. It is extracted from the seeds of grapes and is known for its excellent skin dispersal. It contains an anti-oxidant – proanthocyanidin, known to support the effects of vitamin E and beta-carotene, while increasing the action of vitamin C. It penetrates the skin readily, encouraging cell growth and regeneration.


Citrius paradisi properties: Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, grapefruit extract applied topically can provide an array of anti-aging benefits like evening skin tone and fighting off free radicals. When eaten, it provides the body with important nutrients essential for healthy skin.

Green Tea*

Camellia sinensis Properties: Green tea is a good anti-inflammatory agent thereby reducing inflammation in the skin, and most importantly having an inhibitory action on collagenase (a collagen-reducing enzyme that breaks down collagen). Since green tea helps to inhibit collagenase, the topical use of green tea helps to promote the health and quantity of collagen, thereby maintaining a firm and elastic skin. In one clinical study is was shown that the skin had measurably more elastic tissue content after continuous application of a product containing green tea.


L-histidine properties: This is an essential amino acid and one of the 23 proteinogenic amino acids. Antioxidant, neutralises free radicals; may help boost UV protection. L-Histidine may also help prevent against certain types of skin infections.

Hyaluronic acid

Properties: Hyaluronic Acid is a natural glycosaminoglycan and can be derived from multiple resources. It has many benefits and is one of the most interesting ingredients in skin care, specifically. Naturally found in the body, hyaluronic acid secures moisture and creates fullness—youthful skin naturally abounds with hyaluronic acid.


Simmondsia chinensis properties: Moisturising, emollient, anti-oxidant, rejuvenating, sebum controlling, anti-inflammatory. This substance is really a liquid wax. It is related to human sebum and thus, highly compatible with the human skin. Though this ingredient is known for its protective benefits for skin in dry conditions, improving skin elasticity and suppleness, it is and ideal oil for the control of sebum and for those prone to oily skin. In combination with other nourishing oils, jojoba oil is great for all skins types.

Kakadu plum*

Terminalia ferdinandiana properties: Due to their high concentration of Vitamin C and soothing anti fungal properties. Kakadu plum is great for every skin type, but particularly those with acne prone skin, as this fruit is high in antioxidants that work to detoxify and flush out toxins.

Kiwi Fruit

Actinidia chinensis Properties: The rich variety of antioxidants in kiwifruit can delay the effects of ageing throughout the body. These antioxidants can neutralize the free radicals that damage the cells and accelerate the process of degeneration resulting in changes in skin thickness, elasticity and firmness. Kiwi fruit oil and the oil extracted from its seeds are used in several anti-ageing products. The amazing combination of vitamin C, E, lycopene and other substances can effectively fight free radicals and prevent pre mature ageing of skin. The Vitamin E from Kiwi has been shown to prevent UV induced skin cancer.


Lavandula angustifolia properties: Moisturising, softening, soothing, anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, calming, stimulates circulation, rejuvenating. Promotes cell growth and has a balancing action on sebum production. Excellent also on cuts, bruises, skin irritation/inflammation and as a muscle relaxant - Its aroma is therapeutically calming for the body and soul. As this essential oil promotes endometrial sloughing it should be avoided, in its concentrated form, in the early months of pregnancy.

Lapis lazuli gem essence

Properties: Lapis lazuli is a high-vibration stone. It is a rock composed principally of a mixture of lazurite, calcite and pyrite, with a chemical designation of sodium calcium aluminosilicate. Its chemical structure is represented by the formula (Na,Ca)8 (Al, Si)12O24S2 FeS CaCo3Al2O3. The energy of lapis lazuli is serene and protective, harmonizing body, emotions, mind and spirit. It brings deep inner self-knowledge, clarity and multidimensional cellular healing. It eases stress as well as strengthening the thyroid and parathyroid glands and the skeletal system. Metaphysically speaking these organs "hold the history of our body". At a different level, the energy of this rock is beneficial for hearing, blood and nervous disorders. On a mental and emotional level, lapis lazuli is used to access our deep cellular memory, facilitating awareness and healing of hurts and fears. This energy thus enhances the level of consciousness and calms the soul. The exoteric properties of lapis lazuli are complement and balance the physical benefits of skin care.

Lemon Grass

Cymbopoon flexuosus properties: Research has found that lemongrass holds antidepressant, anti-oxidant, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal, fungicidal, nervine and sedative properties. It also can be used as a deodorant and body tonic. Lemongrass is very helpful for treating certain skin conditions such as acne, rough skin patches, open pores and the like.


Glycyrrhiza glabra properties: Licorice is one of the oldest remedies in history, called “the king of natural medicines.” Geisha long ago recognized its benefits in brightening the skin and its ability to even out skin tone, making it an especially treasured ingredient in their beauty rituals.


Macadamia ternifolia properties: Moisturising, nourishing, anti-oxidant, restructuring, conditioning. It has excellent dermal penetration with a profile that is close to human sebum. This monounsaturated oil has a high content of palmitoleic acid, a substance that is crucial to delaying skin and cell aging. Palmitoleic acid is rare in vegetable oils, and usually found in fish oils. This is a truly marvelous oil with benefits for all skins, but in particular it is of value to mature and delicate skins.

Marshmallow root

Althea Officinalis properties: It is high in starch and mucilagenous polysaccharides, which form a protective gel, along with flavonoids and anthocyanidins. This protective layer over the mucous membranes and skin effectively soothes irritation and relieves inflammation. The root of Marshmallow can promote tissue fluid generation and increase moisture in deficient skin conditions. Marshmallow is used in cosmetics for its soothing, moistening, and calming properties on the skin.

Natural Vitamin E

D-alpha tocopherol properties: A fat-soluble vitamin with a powerful anti-oxidant properties, being protective against free-radicals. It has a beneficial and DNA repair role in most metabolic processes, including the immune system. It is used as soothing agent for skin disorders and sensitivities, leaving the skin with a smooth texture. There are several forms of vitamin E, the most potent of which is the alpha-tocopherol. It is available in its natural form as d-alpha-tocopherol, whereas the synthetic form is designated dl-alpha-tocopherol. The best sources of vitamin are avocados, wheat germ oil and sunflower seeds. Because of its anti-oxidant properties it is used as a natural preservative.


Prunus persica properties: Moisturising, regenerative, restructuring, anti-aging. A monounsaturated oil of fine texture, whose lipid composition make it compatible even with sensitive skins. Peach Kernel Oil is rich in Vitamin E and great for mature and sensitive skins.

Peppermint essential oil

Mentha piperita properties: Cooling, anti-inflammatory, softening, refreshing, invigorating. Peppermint essential oil is wonderfully refreshing and uplifting, though it has also got some contra-indications, e.g. it promotes menstruation, easing period discomfort. Because of this property it should be avoided in pregnancy and by nursing mothers. Due to its strong scent and it its properties, this oil is used only in the lowest amounts in our skin care. At this low level this essential oil provides an uplifting feeling on the mind and an energizing effect on the skin, whether present in a cream or a cleanser.

Plant derived stearic acid

Properties: Softening to skin, firmness to cream. A naturally occurring waxy substance extracted from plant material. It provides a pearly texture to skin care products.

Potassium sorbate

Properties: Potassium sorbate is a naturally occurring substance in various berries and tomatoes. It is effective against yeasts and moulds, as well as some bacteria, especially in products that have a low pH. It is used as a preservative for high water content products.


Rosa damascena properties: Soothing, anti-inflammatory, vaso-constricting, regenerating, restructuring. This essential oil is a real soothing treat for all skins, but it is particularly useful for mature, dry or sensitive skins. However, it is also known for easing discomfort associated with menstruation, as it promotes endometrial sloughing. As a result it should be avoided in pregnancy. Because of this property the amount of the rose essential oil included in our skin care is enough to provide the wonderful bouquet of roses and the soothing properties on the skin, without the associated side effects. Rose essential oil is soothing, calming and known for harmonizing body and soul.


Rosa moschata properties: Rosehip oil contains essential nutrients for tissue regeneration. An excellent source of vitamin C, it is known for its benefits on skin texture and the healing of scars, it is recommended for all skin types. It is also one of the best anti-wrinkle oils, having moisturizing and hydrating properties.


Carthamus tinctorius properties: Safflower oil contains lubricant properties that prompt the skin to retain water and moisture. It consists primarily of linoleic acid, an omega-6 that is packed with essential vitamins. Safflower oil prevents dryness and roughness and removes dirt and oil. Its content makes safflower oil a key treatment for issues including eczema, psoriasis and acne. Its hydrating properties lend skin a healthy glow, promote elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Shea Butter*

Burtyrospermum parkii properties: Regenerative, stimulates micro-circulation, anti-scarring, natural sunscreen. Known for its ability to "melt" into the skin. It is softening, moisturising, anti-inflammatory and soothing properties are excellent for dry, cracked, injured skin. It gives a luxurious velvety feeling to the skin. Shea butter is ideal for sensitive and fragile skins, but a bonus for all skins. Shea butter is also known as Karite butter or African butter. The Karite tree is known as the "Tree of Life" in Africa with many legends on its life supporting properties.

Sorbitan olivate

Properties: Also know as Olivem 1000. This is an oil-in-water PEG-free emulsifying wax made from olives. It is an emulsifier that is also an active ingredient, being Ecocert Approved as a certified organic ingredient. Due to its chemistry it forms highly stable and dermo-compatible liquid structures that are similar to the lipids of human skin. As a result, this emulsifier easily penetrates the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis, as well as the deeper layers of the skin. Because of its restructuring and thickness properties, it has anti-ageing properties, giving tonicity and elasticity to the skin.

Tea Tree

Melaleuca alternifolia properties: The primary uses of tea tree oil have historically capitalized on the antiseptic and anti-inflammatory actions of the oil. This review summarizes recent developments in our understanding of the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of the oil and its components, as well as clinical efficacy.


Vanilla planifolia properties: The exciting benefits of vanilla in our skin care products go far beyond the signature scent—though of course, that’s one of its great gifts! But we like it for other reasons, too. Vanilla is a great source of natural antioxidants. These natural antioxidants help protect against environmental stressors. Thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, and pantothenic acid are also found in this natural ingredients.

Vegetable Glycerin*

Properties: Is an excellent humectant (ability to "attract" water from the environment to itself). Because it absorbs moisture from the air it helps to keep creams and other products moist. Also it helps to maintain the smooth consistency of our products. The glycerin used in our skin care range is entirely plant derived.

Water, Tongariro Spring Water

Aqua – H20 properties: Is the basis of all life, comprising 75% of lean muscle tissue, 95% of blood, 22% of bone and 14% of fat. All water-based ingredients used in our products, such as the distillates and the lapis lazuli gem essence, are filter sterilised through 0.22um sterile filter discs.

Xanthan Gum

Properties: Xanthan Gum is an excellent, sugar based, natural thickener for emulsions and cleansing systems. It is a polysaccharide produced through a bio-fermentation process of Xanthamonas campestris and sucrose or glucose. The result is a powder that readily swells water to enhance stability and viscosity, using small amounts.

Zinc Oxcide

Properties: Zinc Oxide is a white, powdery mineral and one of the safest ingredients for protecting the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is also effective for healing the skin. It can be used to heal wounds, reduce the tenderness associated with sunburns and soften chapped skin.
